Cabin in the Woods

Inshriach Bothy is a modern, off-grid live-work space designed specifically for artist residencies. The bothy was built as part of the Royal Scottish Academy Residencies for Scotland 2011. It was fabricated in residence at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and then transported to Inshriach Estate, four miles from Aviemore, where it sits on the banks of the river Spey within traditional Scottish woodland forming part of the Cairngorms National Park.

MacLeod and Niven drew inspiration from vernacular dwellings and traditional mountain shelters when developing the form of Inshriach Bothy. Its timber-framed structure is clad in corrugated metal that can withstand the diverse atmospheric conditions experienced in the Highlands. Windows on all sides provide views of the surrounding trees and heather.
